I think I philanthropist is someone who donates time, money, or effort to an organization, community, or group in need. I would hope that they do this without personal gain besides feeling good about yourself but I'm sure people who are considered philanthropists have personal agendas as well. I would also hope that when a philanthropists decides to invests in something they step back and let the experts decide how best to utilize their contribution. I know technically that it is considered philanthropy if someone donates a large amount of money to an organization or non-profit but they then try to take control of the project or tell the organization how they want "their money" to be spent on, it takes away from it.
