I don't have any specific idea because I assume that if the block party is canceled it means we wont be able to do something in person. So assuming we have to do something remotely from our respective homes, I think we would have to do something online? Again, not really sure what we can do
I think a class service project we could do could be related to food services. I know that with schools shutting down, a lot of food services for youth are down as well. Maybe we could do something like working alongside a food service organization like a food bank to make sure there's still access to food for people who need it the most
I agree! Maybe as a way to do active service work from home, we could set up an online fundraiser and send out emails/make calls/get active on social media to promote it.
I think this is a great idea! This is something that is needed among many people, especially the elderly who might not be able to go outside.
This is so tricky! Service so often looks like hands-on service, so I feel like we will have to get creative about what a class service project looks like.
I also feel like we are being given an opportunity to do something that feels relevant to the world we are in right now. Maybe we could create more resources for the LWHS community like boredom busters, or maybe we could arrange like an instagram live event. Or maybe we could help small businesses with things we can do online, like helping them organize or something.
or we could raise money for corona through an online campaign? That would be cool too
I like the idea of creating a resource page to help people deal with the boredom and other challenges of quarantine and isolation. I think it's something very feasible to do despite our current online learning situation and could be really helpful
I like the idea of organizing in some way to help out small businesses, especially on Ocean Avenue so we can still support that community. We could definitely do an online fundraiser, but I wonder if we could also reach out to a few that we want to support and ask what they need help with.
So, tricky! However, I think your ideas are good! I've seen the boredom busters that you've posted and they have helped me get through some extremely boring times. I especially like your idea about helping small business as they are being affected greatly by the pandemic. We should build on the small business idea, I'm just not sure how.
I think when you can't reach out physically to bring community together, you have to find individual ways to come together. Maybe we make art pieces individually and are able to come together at some point to join them into a piece? Or if we organize an ongoing art piece that the community can add to? Like one of those chalk-board things?
I really like the idea of doing art pieces and then bringing them together. Unfortunately we are most likely not going to be meeting in person again this year, but maybe we could join the art pieces online somehow? Or we could maybe make a group video for the Lick community?
I like this idea of raising awareness through art. I think it is really cool if we all do a piece individually (maybe get the school community to join also if they want) and then put it all together.
I think with the current shelter-in-place order, one thing that I have been thinking a lot about is shelters and food banks. In particular, I have spent a lot of time volunteering at St. Anthony's and they are doing whatever possible to stay open and continue providing essential services to some of the most vulnerable populations in San Francisco. I think that there will be a growing need for some of those services because many people will be out of work because of business closures. One possible service project could be working with some of the organizations that are staying open to provide those services. I don't know what that would look like, I guess it would depend on when we are able to go out, but one possibility might be going out and purchasing food/supplies and delivering it to some of those organizations.
I think this would be cool. It would be neat to partner with small businesses in order to tackle perpetuating problems like homelessness. We could also combine your idea with Kalin's by providing food for youth programs as well that have shut down.
I think if we can't get together for a class service project. We could possibly reach out to a few different organizations and see if there is a way to volunteer or help out in some way but remotely. Also, I don't exactly know how or if this could be done, but maybe we could have a "virtual block party" and have videos, games, articles, or something else.
I like the idea of a "virtual block party" although I wonder how this would work. Maybe we could make different videos that could be fun and present those to the community?
If the block party was cancelled, that would mean that the virus was still a pressing issue. One of the things that I've been thinking a lot about is how we can help people who are either experiencing homelessness, or rely on food banks and food stamps, at this time. I am fortunate enough to be able to be in a sheltered home, with food that we were able to stock up on. I really worry about all the people who don't have a roof over their heads or food in the pantry. I wonder if we could do a fundraiser (either online or at school) to help raise money for a food bank or something like that.
I like the idea of doing a fundraiser for food services. We could all have a certain amount we have to get minimum and then send it to a food bank maybe.
This could be a good way to get a larger group of people involved too, which I like because I feel like thats a big part of the block party. I agree that it would be a good idea to focus on food services and I think getting the LWHS community as a whole involved would also help our community stay connected.
One idea is to create small care packages or write cards for a specific group of people or community that is being impacted by corona in some way. Maybe this community is the people in or around Ocean Avenue, though it would probably be difficult to do care packages for so many people.
I like this idea! Maybe we could send postcards/mail to people in retirement homes who are no longer able to receive visitors
I like the idea of doing care packages! I hadn't thought of this but I feel like this could help bring the spirit of the Block Party to the Ocean Ave. neighborhood without doing something in person. I wonder how we would figure out who to distribute them to though.
I like the idea of sending something. I think some people are scared of receiving packages though due to infection risk— maybe we could do online pen pals?
I really like this idea. I think there are definitely different supplies that people need during this time. Maybe we could make masks if we had the supplies and send them to different communities.
Maybe we could each create art or write a piece of something on different topics to raise awareness about a social justice issue.
In class we talked about the issue of homelessness and how our class could take some time to do volunteering at a place like Glide or the SF Food Bank. However, those places might also be shut down during the corona virus outbreak or it might not be the best idea to go out during this time. When school starts again this volunteering might be a viable option. Earlier this semester we did art projects to raise awareness for different issues, so maybe we could do another art type thing as a service option.
I think volunteering could be a good idea, but it would have to be in a way where we wouldn't interact with other people. Since there are a lot elderly that are lonely or can't get access to food, we could try to think of a way where we send emails or cards or something to elderly residents?
Perhaps, we can start an online fundraiser for a cause of our choosing. Since we did our podcasts, we already have a good amount of causes we can choose from.
I also think an Online Fundraiser is a great idea --> I think many people want to donate but are unsure where to send to send your money
good idea! does LWHS philanthropy have an instagram? that would be a good way to share this with the community.
yes! Is there a way we can incorporate the rest of the lick community?
I think an online fundraiser is a great way to help a cause. We also won't have to worry about any infection this way because it is all online.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
